General description of our services and how they work

George at Asda is an e-commerce platform offering a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories, home goods, children's and babywear, as well as school supplies. The services are accessible via a European website and mobile applications (iOS and Android). The platform allows users to:

  • Browse and search for products across various categories such as "Women", "Men", "Kids", and "Home".
  • Filter and sort products based on specific criteria (size, colour, style, etc.).
  • Place orders with delivery options or collection points.
  • Manage their account to view orders, update settings, and access purchase history.
  • Use additional features such as wish lists, size guides, and detailed product descriptions.

Accessibility features

Our goal is to design websites and apps that can be used by everyone without difficulty in accordance with the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.2, Equality Act 2010 and the European Accessibility Act.

Our website and our iOS and Android apps include features that support accessibility, the following are just some:

  • We write in clear, plain English;
  • Information is available through multiple sensory channels (e.g., visual and audio formats);
  • Content in text format may be converted into alternative formats;
  • We use fonts with appropriate size and shape, strong contrast, and adjustable spacing between letters, lines, and paragraphs;
  • We provide alternative descriptions for all non-text content.

How accessible is 'George'?

The website and our iOS and Android apps were last audited for accessibility on 7 March 2025 by CDS. This was a full audit against the WCAG 2.2 Level AA standard using a combination of automated tools and manual testing with a range of assistive technologies.

There are some issues that we are actively working to fix:

  • Keyboard users or speech recognition to navigate may find some parts of the site difficult to use, including Search and the product filters.
  • Screen reader users will have difficulty understanding some parts of the site, including sizing details and customer review ratings.
  • Some parts of the site, such as the footer and the product category landing page navigation, do not have visible keyboard focus styles, so will be difficult to navigate using keyboard only.
  • There are some display issues throughout the site when text is resized up to 200%.

We are working to address these issues.

Continuous improvement

  • We provide training and learning opportunities for colleagues to upskill in digital accessibility.
  • We carry out usability tests with users who have access needs.
  • We carry out regular accessibility audits and fix problems.
  • We are building a design library to meet WCAG Level AA.
  • We include accessibility in our acceptance criteria when developing our website and apps.
  • We prioritise issues found from testing, audits, complaints and feedback from users, based on customer impact.

Our three-year plan

We aim to continual optimise accessibility into our ways of working. As we do this, we plan do two (2) things:

  1. Create an inclusive colleague and customer research panel(s)
  2. Create a permanent empathy lab in Asda House.

The panel(s) will support the business understand if something is feasible and viable. The business will use the panel(s) during research and testing phases of a project.

We endeavour to create a permanent empathy lab in Asda House. The lab will include different device types, scenarios and accessibility preferences that reflect our customers and colleagues' personas. This will support colleagues conduct training, research and testing.
