LEGO Technic - 6x6 All Terrain Tow Truck - 42070 is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok, but... The set itself look nice with some interesting features but to me it seems unfinished. There is plenty of small details that would convert it in a better set: some cover on the back, a bigger (fake) motor or even some better finishing for the battery box. Apart from that, having less parts than the 42069 but power functions, it does not seem the price difference should be that big. On the positive side I liked a lot building the inside mechanism. I find it curious how it works. I also find nice the color scheme and the big tires, I definitely will build something out of it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 6X6 Allterain tow truck Up to this point this is the most challenging model we have built. The gearing and working differentials are just amazing. I'm really impressed with the actual 6 wheel drive. I payed particular attention to all the gogs and gears, making sure I use the right ones as there are many different sizes. My 16 yr old daughter built a small part of this model and also found it very challenging, although she has many years experience and has built big models before. We have a fair collection. We are very impressed with all the functions. This is a great model to build as well as to play with. I will buy another one the same and build it the second option available, followed by the Mercedes truck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A disappointing flagship model As the 40th anniversary of Lego Technic, many fans have been anticipating the flagship set to be a special model, but we end up getting a highly disappointing model. Before I go on to list the negatives I would like to note a few positive aspects of this set so it does not appear i'm hating on this set. Pros -After the build I was actually surprised on the size of the set. It's size by no means equals or surpasses that of the 42055 Bucket wheel excavator, but for the small piece count is pretty sizable. -The outriggers on the sides and back are very effective and cool looking. -Six huge wheels -Partially remote controlled Now on to the negatives... Cons - Only partially remote controlled. One IR receiver, remote, battery box, and 2 motors, which alone costs under $50 somehow adds over $100 to the set. (If going by the average10 cents per piece) - If you just want this for the wheels, but the 42054 tractor set, it has four of them for a much better price. - The crane in back of the truck is disappointingly small and the set contains no cargo. -The set includes a new shade of blue, the third new shade of light in technic three years straight making it hard for us collectors. -No suspension -Looks crude and unfinished, especially the cargo bed seeing that there are holes everywhere in it. It looks very ugly. -Only has a V4 engine for a massive truck.42050 drag racer has a V8 engine and costs five times less! Not saying that I won't more engine pieces, but it just doesn't make sense. -Doesn't work well outside in bumpy areas, it gets stuck to easily and the remote can't be more than five feet away from the model. -The B-model manages to be even worse Overall A very disappointing model especially for the flagship model of the 40th anniversary of Technic and extremely overpriced for no apparent reason. Below I am comparing this model with some previous models, sets that are cheaper and more well worth your money 42070 Tow Truck: 1862 pieces, $289.99 (USD) conclusion: 15.5 cents per piece horribly overpriced 42069 Extreme Adventure: 2382 pieces, $179.99 conclusion: This set is a more worthy candidate for this years flagship model. Not only does it have 500+ more pieces it also costs $110 dollars cheaper! 42055 Bucket Wheel Excavator: 3929 pieces, $279.99 conclusion: Last year's flagship model costs $10 cheaper, but has three times the amount of pieces! Really Lego? What were you THINKING?!?!? This set has a much better use for your money. 42054 Tractor: 1977 pieces, $179.99 conclusion: You get one hundred more pieces for a hundred dollars cheaper. What more can I say? 42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs: 2793 pieces, $229.99 conclusion: 900+ more pieces costing $60 less. This set also happens to be one of my top three favorite Lego sets of all time, so I'd definitely recommend this to especially since it'll retire soon. 8043: Motorized Excavator: 1123 pieces, $199.99 conclusion: I wanted to include at least one other remote controlled set, so since i have this one, I thought that I'd use it for this comparison. Although it has 700 less pieces it does cost $90 less, and is even fully remote controlled. The power functions alone cost about $90 which makes this set a pretty decent deal. If by now you don't agree with me on how bad this set is you either really want to support Lego or you are just too optimistic. $290 is a waste of money on this set, and I'd highly recommend any of the sets listed above. All Technic sets this year in general have been disappointing, (with the exception of 42069 Extreme adventure and 42063 BMW Adventure) especially after the great wave of sets that came last year. Lego has said that this is because that they had three licensed sets last year and only one this year. However, I don't think this is the case. Shouldn't it make the licensed sets more expensive? Even with the small increase from a total of $1163 to $1200 the price per part range has increased from 8.9 cents per piece (12,934 pieces) to 11.4 cents per piece.(10,526 pieces) I hope Lego will learn from these mistakes and continue to improve over last year's sets. I can't wait to see what they have next, but let's just hope we don't have another year like this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Tow Truck! I was waiting to get my hands on this set since I first saw images of it months before release. I just love everything about the look: bold colors and stickers, the huge tires, the overall giant size and proportions of it. I got this set mainly to display in my office, but my 5 year old son loves towing vehicles and things all around the house. And the outriggers are a total hit. Yes, it's a bit expensive for the part count, but it's motorized and remote controlled...and you get 6 of those massive tires. I selected 'challenging' for this model mainly because I was careless and forgot to put on one of the gear shifting elements early on. So I basically built it twice. No regrets though, I love this set!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 42070 Way! overpriced, this set does not deserve to be called a flagship. and to make things worse, the B model is ... just a mess , short, very very disappointing set! Sorry Lego, you can do soooooo much better!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed For the money they charge for this set I was REALLY disappointed !!! The interior SUCKS and no floor in the bed !!! It looks like they had a great chassis THEN threw on a bunch of SPARE parts and made them fit !!! Kind of like an afterthought !!! I HOPE this is NOT what we have to look forward to in the future from LEGO !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what it looks like I've bought the flagship set for the past 13 years and enjoyed this build a lot! The chassis system is packed with gears and mechanisms which is always fun to figure out what they'll be doing along the way. The body is exactly like what it looks like in all the photos so it wasn't a surprise when certain areas were a little lighter on parts than usual. The body (or shell) is important but I feel for most Technic enthusiasts it's the mechanics that are the draw and it that area of this set does not disappoint. If your priorities are on the looks you would be better to by a Creator set. There are also some cool new parts; nice blue panels and obviously the giant tires. Lots of Power Functions, gears, turntables, differentials and linear actuator cylinders. The pistons and dummy engine are always cool. Having worked on big old trucks and heavy machinery I'd like to point out that a four cylinder engine is really used in a lot of them (even bulldozers) and are quite powerful. They get their power from being big cylinders, having many cylinders doesn't add much to the power, it does make for a smoother ride. The price was high but you know that when you buy it, and the truck is just what it looks like. I was happy with the set and would definitely buy it again.
