What can I say? Purists of Arthur Conan Doyle might scoff at this reimagining of Sherlock Holmes and the changes that a modern interpretation involves, but it manages to pay homage to it whilst still standing tall on its own merits. Fantastically written and Cumberbatch interprets Holmes as a cold, calculating and aspergian genius which contrasts brilliantly with Freeman's Dr Watson who is more of an everyman, inferior in intelligence yet socially superior. There's delightful conflict between them with both characters having their own inadequacies next to the other, though Holmes is too much of a narcissist to know it. The back and forth between the dry Holmes and the earnest Watson has got to be some of the funniest writing in a long time.
This second series doesn't disappoint. It's as fresh and original as ever. This may be somewhat counter intuitive seeing as it's essentially just a modern rehash of an existing story, but it's in it's execution that this series really triumphs. It's an entirely different animal to classic Holmes.
