Rated 5 out of 5 by Brilliant When I first unboxed this product I was amazed the the sheer amount of pieces. it was my biggest Lego set ever and my first technic set, so I wasnt sure how well i would do building it. I would only recommend this product if youve had years of lego experience, and preferably some technic experience (I made numerous mistakes throughout). I set about building it and it was incredibly complex, but easily worth it. the most incredible part of the set has to be the gearbox which controls all the motorised functions. Its tricky to build but incredibly clever. Overall this set is difficult but amazing. 11 May 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Epic model, with an epic flaw I'm the odd one out here, seems everyone here is happy with 42009. Really can't say much more thats all ready been said about 42009. In saying that my experience with 42009 has been somewhat disappointing. Those annoying outriggers, could never quite figure them; I was left unhappy with it. Over looked build, no mistakes that I did, just mistake by that one Lego designer who made 42009. Those out riggers are just flawed , was that unhappy sold it to someone else to deal with the puzzle. Wile I enjoyed the build and like the look of it, I could not keep an model with a design flaw, sad to see it go happy that I no longer have to look at a paper weight. Shame that the outriggers spoil the whole model. 26 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Hands down, the best I ever had If you buy this set, you won't regret it. While you're assembling it, you see tiny tiny pieces becoming something HUGE. Also, I should add that seeing how the mechanics work and interact with each other is tremendously satisfying, and what got me interested in engineering in the first place. To add, the little movable objects (such as the seats, the smooth turning wheel, engine, etc) makes it feel alive and just like the real deal. I should also point out that there were some missing pieces. Being such a large construct, it is completely understandable, and the first time it ever happened to me. But, even then, Lego showed a trustworthy customer support, by shipping them to my place with an apology letter. Definitely a must-have for Technic fans. 23 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by This is BIG I originally saw this in the product area for Technic. First thought it was decent. When I purchased it, the box was HUGE. And then came the building. 3 Days(Actually 6 or so hours over 3 days) later, and this thing is quite large. It is quite complex and very well designed, considering there is only 1 motor that powers 6 functions, all from the superstructure. Also, it is somewhat heavy, but thats for stability. I really like the intricacy of this model, and so far, this makes for my largest set that I own. Would DEFINITELY recommend. 04 August 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by A GREAT & CHALLENGING Set It was awesome building this set. I had to take time to separate the pieces before constructing this set. My recommendations: (1) there is a gear that would be position just near the motor, I would put in the gear first ( Booklet 4, step 63 p. 38) before installing the motor. I try to put the motor in according the instructions, but it was difficult to get the gear on the cross axle. (2) After constructing the control assembly (booklets 4 & 5) and placing it on the truck (Booklets 1-3), I would make sure that the motor is able to bring the outriggers in & out and up & down before permanently attaching this assembly onto the truck. (3) I would put all the black pegs and the longer blue pegs into a small container to keep them separated from the other pieces. 06 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fun and Challenging. This is a very big and complex set. I had a few issues with the out riggers. Pay extra attention to the direction you place gears (book 2 page 39 & book 3 page 6) and make sure you use black 15 hole bars on the outriggers (book 2 page 21 & 56). I had to pull the crane section off and change the rear gears around to get the out riggers to work. The front was wrong but too hard to get to. The only thing wrong with this set is my building errors. I'm not going to be happy till i fix it all up. I'll get around to it .... one day. 02 September 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by A long fun build. Problem at the End This monster project will keep you occupied for a long time. On two subassemblies I had to hunt down a misplaced gear (out of about 50 gears). I loved doing that. Very rewarding to find the out the location of misplaced gear and fix it. What I didn't like was the string used to raise and lower the two arms of the crane. The instructions were useless. I never did figure out how to run the string. I would venture that only an expert Lego builder could get it to work. A big disappointment after so much work. 18 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Don't go without this one This is a very technical build, requiring great attention to detail. I made a few mistakes resulting in disassembly of some parts. It took at least 8 hours, probably closer to 10. It's hard to put away when you're making great progress, but it helps to only do a little at a time. The detail is awesome, and shows itself when the build is done. The functionality is awesome. Some of the gearing is kind of slow, but it's fine. I only wish the whole vehicle was motorized, and could drive. Maybe in Mk III. 27 September 2013
