I enjoyed the build, didn't take as long as the recovery truck. Only problem was one of the cross pins that make up the elbow joint ,for the boom extension is the wrong one.instructions call for a dark grey pin with a blank spot 1/4 from the end. Because the surport pieces have a cross hole the hole length of the pin could't be ulitized,as needed. fortunaly I had extra from previous kits. I bought the power unit. It works well ,have to watch the action ,to stop each function before it hit the limt. There isn't any racheting if you over drive each function. But it look good and My grandson will have fun with it.

This is a fun build, not too demanding but still interestingly complex.
A couple of hours of concentration should see you right.
I love the way the arm and gears come together during the build and the finished product is pretty cool and playable but this kit excels when you add 8293 power functions both in playability and the thoughtful way the motor etc are neatly hidden from view, unlike other kits where the power functions seem to be a last minute addition and detract from the overall aesthetic of the design.
Very highly recommended and a total bargain at the current price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mailman2181 Awesome set for most budgets and skill levels.
This is a great Technic set. I own several others, but this is the largest and most complex one yet. It was fun to put together, but you need to pay very close attention to the instructions. There are many detail areas that can affect the build if not done right. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I love the transmission to actuate the arm and gripper. It is a good finished size, and the piece count to cost was great. I can't wait to take it apart, so I can build it again. I hope Lego comes out with another large set like this. Maybe next time a grader.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BungJon This is a fun set to build that results in a nice looking, solidly built, and highly functional excavator. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the build techniques, e.g. the use of the steering CV joints at the base of the arm to drive two of the functions: bending the arm and opening and closing the claw.
The set comes with a great selection of pieces, including many new and rare pieces such as: 2 linear actuators (LA), 1 mini-LA, 4 new claw pieces, 4 Axle and Pin Connector Perpendicular Double 4L, 4 Pin Connector Perpendicular 2 x 4 Bent, 2 Axle and Pin Connector Hub with 2 Axles, 2 Steering CV Joints, and 2 Axle 4 with Center Stop. The set does not include any power functions, which is a good thing because that keeps the price down, but it includes instructions for adding power functions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LittleRedToyota This is my favorite Lego set
I always wanted an motorised Technic escavator when I was a little girl, but never got one because they were expensive.
So this was the first set I bought when I was an adult and earned my own money. Not THIS one, but it's "ancestor", who had a scoop instead of a claw.
It kept me busy for hours and I enjoyed playing with it afterwards... can you imagine; a grown woman playing around with a remote controlled escavator in her livingroom... it was a childhood dream come true!
In the later years, my husband and I have picked it apart and rebuilt it numberous times, just for fun. Poor thing is starting to get a bit worn, but I am sure it still has many years left.
I am a little bummed that my husband won't allow me to clean out the cats litterbox with it though.... ;-) But I sometimes use it to refill the cats dry food.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mriewest Great Set for Play and Parts
I got this set because I will be buying the Mindstorms EV3 when they come out,and I didn't have very many Technic Pieces.I had some minor complications with the set but I fixed all of them in 30 or so minutes.I added Power Functions and its very cool.I would like to see lego make directions to make the whole thing motorized(currently only the arm is).
Cons:Nothing really besides being a little challenging(not a bad thing)

Rated 5 out of 5 by legokid2017 AMAZING!!
This is one my favorite sets that I have gotten. With this being my frist "big" Lego Technic set i had a little trouble at the start of the build but it was very interesting building the gear box section. This set has many freatures some of which are rotating 360, raising and lowering the arm, grabing parts with the grapple, and the ability to be motorized.
not to many stickers
nice set for parts
easy to add your own attachments. I have a made a drill, saw, shears, and a bucket for mine.
able to motorize it
it is a little slow moving the arm with the gears
smaller than I would have liked
quite complicated for frist time Technic builds
can't do more than one thing with it at a time (Ex. opening the grapple and lowering the boom at the same time)
This is amazing set and would recommend to any Lego fan!

Rated 4 out of 5 by technicholas One of my favorites!
Like most Technic builders, I really want the 8043 motorized Excavator set, but this slightly smaller set is still excellent for the money! Adding the power functions is a must. Even with the cost of the PF kit its still a great a value! the functions work well! The grabber claw is ingenious and works very well at grabbing piles of loose material or even fairly heavy objects!
Im already trying to modify the the boom with a traditional bucket.
