I bought the DC50 as it was lighter and goes round corners, which is is and it does.
However, the hose is much shorter than on my DC01, so I have to carry the DC50 up the stairs whilst trying to vacuum, not what I wanted to be doing, its quite a balancing act. The hose does not always pull out of the vacuum well, and when you try to pull it out, tends to pull the whole cleaner over. The DC50 does not work on my new carpet in the study. I phoned Dyson, after messing around with it, they concluded that the DC50 does not work on all carpets!
In conclusion, the DC50 is light, goes round corners, does not work on some carpets and has a short wand!

I hate this product. I bought it a few months ago, going on the reputation of the brand alone. What a bad choice.
The cable is far too short for a start. The machine itself seems to clog up very quickly with hair. I have found that the suction is poor because of this. I am constantly having to unblock the machine to get any decent suction. The hose is pointless. It's too short for anything, unless you're cleaning above head height, but strangely enough most of the dirt is on my floors. I am unable to vacuum my stairs.
I would never recommend this to anyone.
I will be dumping this as soon as I can and buying a vacuum that IS fit for purpose.

Recently bought this vacuum cleaner, have never had a dyson before but have always wanted one. As I suffer with back problems i have always struggled when using vacuum cleaners in the past because they have been heavy but the DC50 Animal is light and easy to maneouvre, and is a pleasure to use. The only criticism i would say is when i vacuum the stairs it is a bit awkward to dismantle the handle to fit the attachments on and then if you want to carry on vacuuming the carpet you have to put the attachments back and continue. i suppose i will get better at it with use, just wish their was an easier way to put the attachments on much quicker.

Our old Dyson dc07 Animal was becoming to heavy to carry upstairs and was also heavy to push around so decided to buy the DC50 animal as we have a dog. It had also just been reduced considerably in price.
We have had it two days and love it already, It cleans better than our old one, is very manoeuvrable and no problem carrying it up the stairs.
It is easy to use to clean the stairs if you follow the excellent instruction.
Compared to other Dyson cleaners it initially feels flimsy but you soon get used to it.
It is no problem to empty, but the size of the bin reflects the reduction in weight and size.
All in all a very nice, well engineered machine.

I have been a loyal customer of dyson for many years and have owned at least 4 different models during this time but I have to say that my experience with this newest one has not been very positive. It is great that it is light weight for carrying up and down stairs but this means that the cleaner often tips over when you are using the hose attachment. In addition the hose is too short to go even half way up the stairs so you have to take the whole vaccum cleaner up with you. The ball function is good and the suction ok but overall this cleaner feels very cheap and flimsy and is certainly not up to the standard that I have come to expect from dyson.

Monday is my usual day to vacuum the whole house and now, with my "Animal", it is an absolute breeze.
My DC50 is light and comfortable to handle and makes doing the stairs so much easier. The ball action was a little different to use at first - it is all wrist action now compared with the old way of pushing and pulling - but I soon settled into this modern, effortless way of vacuuming my carpets. The very best thing about my DC50 is its remarkable cleaning power - my carpets look new again.
The only fault I find with my DC50 is extracting the wand from the hose -this procedure is all a bit "lumpy". This operation needs to be refined .

I find the drum extremely difficult to empty with fluff sticking inside which needs an implement to remove it. it's certainly not a swift easy empty. I find the wand awkward to release and the hose is not long enough. I have awkward narrow stairs and having to haul the machine up the stairs to use the hose attachment is frustrating and annoying.
I also find the brush attachment is the wrong angle to be effective.
When I am running the cleaner over the floors it is efficient and light. However I am disappointed overall as specified above. I have had Dyson cleaners for more years than I can remember so I am not a new user. GrannyPam11

I have no issue with the capacity that this holds however the hose is inadequate. I bought this so that I would not have to carry a heavy vacuum cleaner up and down stairs which I can. The promotional material show this model being used to clean the stairs and shows the hose with a good reach. I have found that the hose is so short that you can only do a few stairs then have to balance the vacuum cleaner on the stairs as you move up the staircase. The hose also feels very flimsy and I doubt it will be long before it rips. For the cost of this product I am very disappointed and would not buy another Dyson. I would not recommend this product to a friend.
