This is my 2nd Dyson which I've had for over a year. Overall I'm disappointed and don't believe it's as good as my previous one.
The plus points are:
- great on hard floors
- small head is excellent for getting under furniture
- it's light with good mobility
- it's easy to release the cylinder to empty
- it's really hard to use on carpets. My 11 yr old can't use it (not that he'd need much excuse admittedly, but I can't disagree with him...)
- I don't like the storage mode - it's cumbersome and fiddly.
- the attachments aren't great - the brush feature gives way very easily
The real insult is that my cleaner prefers to bring her own vacuum rather than use the DC39.... :(

Whilst the vacuum is new it doesn't feel markedly better than our old Dyson, it doesn't have a rotating brush in the head and thus the impact on carpet pile is, imho, poorer. Not to mention dirt lift. There are much fewer tools than with competitor products.
The lower capacity reservoir means that you are emptying more often an it is not so easy as represented by Dyson.
The vacuum feels made of poor quality plastic although, to be fair it hasn't broken thus far.
Storage wise the hose and vacuum head remain a problem (awkward putting away in a relatively spacious cupboard).
We just might try one of their competitors next time instead of just rushing into buying another Dyson on reputation alone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Gretchen I needed a vacuum that was easy to use
And owned many others, before this one did choose
My back used to ache, and my eyes fill with tears
As I struggled to vacuum with others for years
Some were so heavy, and suction was poor
My carpets and floors were not spotless for sure
Then, I reached a point where vacuuming I'd dread
And I'd then use a broom to sweep up instead
But, I promised myself, when I'd some cash to spare
My life it would change, and no more would I care
About all the strain, with all toil gone
I'd buy "ME" a present, a smart wee DYSON
So, now that I've owned it for quite a wee while
I notice that vacuuming makes me want to smile
As I glide round the house, without my back breaking
LOOK at the difference my DYSON is making.

Overall very pleased with this. Light and easy to manouver around tables and chairs etc. Works well on hard surfaces but I find it fairly hard work on carpeted floors - I have only had upright cleaners before which have been much easier to use on larger carpeted areas. The only other problem I have is that it does not reach to the top of the stairs as my old Dyson upright did - unfortunately it isn't something I checked before I bought it, I just assumed it would! Apart from that it is easy to use and easy to empty and does the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by rowbotg2 Finally got it right
Purchased this after retiring the old DC07 upstairs only due to its weight and the fact we have new wooden floors downstairs.
We had the DC07 serviced and the Dyson recommended a cylinder for wood floors so initially we purchased the smaller DC47 but thought we would prefer stronger suction so sent it back and got a DC39.
Strange at first but got the knack now and think this is excellent , we have a cream retriever leaving hairs all over the floor and vac most days , it does not scratch the floor, picks everything up and is easy to handle.
We also bought the elongagated hard floor tool , this is superb for hard floors and I would recommend strongly, also cheaper long term than buying the Animal version.
Recommended , especially for tiled and wood flooring.

This is our 3rd Dyson and we would not consider any other vacuum as we feel that it cannot be beaten for performance. Prior to the recent purchase we conducted our own research and came up with this model for our personal use. The DC 39 is easy to operate and glides very easy around the floor and is such a size that it can be placed on the step of the stairs with confidence. The actual performance of the DC39 is far better than our previous model and out performs it with astonishing results.

replaced my 10 year old upright dyson with a cylinder DC39 multi floor. Was impressed in the store with its power when I tried it out. Ten days later I am regretting not doing a better survey or reading a few reviews before purchase. My new Dyson is very good on all surfaces as claimed and I would be very happy with it were it not for the long dog hairs shed by my beloved spaniel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the machine on normal carpets and it is excellent on vynil kitchen floors.
Because the master tool does not have rotating bristles in its head it does not pick up the hairs easily. Unfortunately the store did not have a DC39 Animal when I purchased and I bought convinced this one would do as well. Now I am wondering if I can purchase a head from the DC39 Animal and will it fit my model?

I used to have a Dyson upright which was good but heavy so had rather drifted away from the make as well as living in a house with few carpets so not much vacuuming to do. New house, all in cream carpet showed desperate need for a powerful cleaner. This one is easy to manoeuvre, has a good powerful action and the clever floating head really gets the pile clean. Even the tools are very useful as well as easy to clip on and off and store.
I am so glad I bought this model.
